How Are You #Doingsociology?

Last year, ASA focused on why you #lovesociology. This year we would like to know how you are #doingsociology. What are you doing as a sociologist? Being a sociologist is about doing sociology. On the newly designed ASA website, there is a section on the homepage, titled “What Sociologists Do,” which highlights the important and valuable work being done by sociologists. Many an undergraduate major or a full professor has asked or been asked, “What do you do with a sociology degree?” There are resources for that, but it always helps to hear from someone doing sociology.

ASA wants to know why you chose sociology and what you are doing as a sociologist. We want to hear from sociologists in all fields, at all levels, at a variety of institutions—early-career academics; teachers at community colleges; sociologists in government, research, or non-profit organizations; or undergraduate/graduate students.

Through social media accounts (i.e., Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, blogs), use the hashtag #doingsociology and let us know your name, your institution or school (optional), and

  • Why do you do sociology?
  • What got you into #doingsociology?
  • What do you do when you’re #doingsociology?
  • How do you do sociology in your career as a sociologist—inside and outside of academia?
  • What important contributions does sociology make in various fields?

We will curate the most memorable posts and include them in ASA’s Storify account. Note that Facebook posts must be made public or you need to tag the American Sociological Association.

At the ASA Annual Meeting in Seattle, we will be filming short (5 minutes) interviews with sociologists on the topic what does it mean to do sociology. Filming will take place August 20-21 from 9:00 am-5:00 pm. If you are interested in being interviewed, email olexy@asanet.org to schedule a time that is convenient for you.
